Caring for the Community

At Home and Abroad

Dr. Tom Harle has long since discovered his passion for helping less fortunate people around the world. As if running his own dental practice wasn’t enough, he has ventured his time and expertise to starting and running three other initiatives – each with an aim to improve the livelihood and health of the poor and homeless, as well as share with them the love, hope, and salvation of Jesus Christ.

Today, he balances his time between his “daytime” prosthodontic dental practice and managing each of his three charitable organizations. It is with due cause that he has earned himself quite the respectable reputation among Ottawa’s dental professional community – and not to mention the poor!

Using the same portable dental equipment that the Health Teams International uses on their mission trips across the world, PODS effectively “brings the clinic to the patient“. With a team of volunteers, PODS has partnered with the Young Parent Support Network of Ottawa, to provide “no-cost” services across Ottawa at three of its host agencies: The Salvation Army Bethany Hope Centre, The Youville Centre and St. Mary’s Home.

Founded in 2007, the Ottawa Mission Dental Clinic has already donated over $1.7 million in free dental care to the poor and homeless of Ottawa, and is Canada’s largest faith-based, volunteer-driven, organization for dental care for the homeless. Unlike regular healthcare, people without money cannot afford dentistry, and oftentimes have to suffer the pains that come with untreated conditions. Improving their smile not only brings them confidence and hope, but it puts them in a better position for attaining skills or employment.
